About the Courtyard Gallery

The Courtyard Gallery was established and is run by two local Hampshire artists; Sue Colyer & Barbara Whitbourn. Wishing to create a contemporary but welcoming space in which to display and sell their art and a studio space in which to work, the Courtyard Gallery opened in March 2022.

All the work on display in the gallery is available to purchase (unless otherwise indicated) and all three artists accept commissions.

You will find Barbara and Sue in the gallery and working on their artwork on various days each week from Thursday to Sunday. To find out more about each individual artist please read the following information below.

Barbara Whitbourn

Barbara is a contemporary abstract artist, working with mixed media to produce work which reflects an emotional response to the natural erosion of the landscape. Abstraction is a passion for her, the space left for the viewer to construct an understanding of the painting and emotional connection to it. Her love of rusting metals, erosion and the built environment have led her into abstracted landscape. She enjoys using a variety of mediums including acrylic and oils in transparent layers, to produce pieces which have texture and depth.

Sue Colyer

I am a self-taught local artist with a passion for watercolour and I find its unique qualities enables me to paint the subject I love - nature in all its glory!

Using memories of places that I know and love, my aim is to paint a personal response to that subject, allowing the subject to be the inspiration of the painting rather than the resulting image.

A large portion of my watercolour paintings reflect emotions and memories of landscapes past and present. Watercolour is the perfect medium to capture the transparency and fluidity of nature itself and the beauty of its very being.

I work on a variety of papers and over time I have developed a collection of my favourite watercolours, which I tend to use in a limited palette style where, quite often, only two colours are used in an image.

I also have available a selection of Giclée Prints and cards which are taken from original paintings. I am on Facebook and Instagram as Sue Colyer Art and my website is www.suecolyer.com
